The footage that looks effortless almost always comes from people who felt at ease. A little preparation does most of that work. Here’s how to walk into a shoot relaxed.
Before the day
- Get clear on the one thing the video needs to say — clarity on set beats a long shot list.
- Pick wardrobe that feels like you; avoid tight stripes and busy patterns that flicker on camera.
- Sleep and hydrate — it genuinely shows on screen.
- If you’re speaking, know your key points, not a memorized script. Real beats rehearsed.
On the day
- Arrive with a little buffer so you’re not rushing into frame.
- Bring options — a couple of wardrobe choices, any props or products that matter.
- Trust the person behind the camera; a good one will keep it relaxed and guide you.
- Forget the lens. The moment you stop performing is the moment it starts looking like you.
The secret nobody tells you
Almost everyone thinks they’re “bad on camera.” You’re not — you’re just self-conscious, and that’s normal. My whole job is to make that feeling disappear: keeping my distance, keeping it light, and waiting for the real you to show up. It always does.
